I am thinking strongly of buying one but there are so many options out there that it is hard to make a decision and without getting opinions how does one know which one is a good one. I need it mainly to keep the air dust free.

You cannot keep the air dust free.
A model was recommended in your other post.

I have a large Honeywell, two desktop top types that wear Sears name, and one small unit in the front bedroom. All are electronic and have cleanable filters. They are able to filter smells as well with charcoal elements. I rarely use the charcoal. They attract quite a lot of dust as evidenced when you clean them once a month. I won't have a HEPA filter unit. The filters are grossly overpriced and a joke at best. When I did mold remediation these were "the tool" to use. What a dog and pony show mold remediation is. Regardless, the HEPA units don't filter any better than the electronic ones and the electronic units cost you nothing but electricity to use, no incredibly expensive filters to buy. But as good as they are, they are near worthless if your house is carpet. Carpet is the best at filtering dust and allergens from the air. And then when you walk on it, poof, there they are again. I have no carpet in my house. A good vacuum, a good dust mop is all it takes to keep dust and allergens down.

I used to have a electrostatic, the dog used to bark at the arcing, snap, crackle, pop sounds. My current kenmore is totally silent
