Center for Diseases Control says Lumber Liquidators flooring cancer risks are way higher than previously announced.
Lumber Liquidators reportedly cut ties with its Chinese suppliers, but company stocks are still down roughly 80% from pre-investigation levels.
This morning, Reuters reports that the health agency hadn’t converted between feet and meters in some calculations of exposure concentrations, which gave markedly lower estimates of airborne formaldehyde levels than what may actually be produced by the flooring.
The corrected numbers paint a more serious picture of health problems allegedly stemming from the products, including an estimated rate of 6 to 30 cancer cases per 100,000 exposures, about 3 times greater than the previously announced 2 to 9. Imperial to metric conversion mistakes happens all the time. It's easy to overlook because often times, units are assumed and that's when errors happen.
Sometimes I wish the US would go metric and be done with it. It's hard dealing with the rest of the world in metric units and then having to convert here. Errors due to conversion mistakes happen all the time.

I agree:
Can you imagine losing $125 million thanks to a little metric system error? That’s exactly what happened in 1999 when NASA lost a Mars orbiter because one team used metric units for a calculation, and the other team didn’t. Guess they didn’t learn from their previous mistake…
because … just a year before, NASA lost equipment worth millions thanks to shoddy conversion practices.
In 1983, an Air Canada plane ran out of fuel in the middle of a flight.
In hospitals grams and grains are still pretty common mistakes (only metric system should be used for prescribing drugs). Also nurses can't read the doctor's notes and patients end up being overdosed quite often.
The bottom with not only Lumber Liquidators but other US companies is the incredibly cheap costs
of doing business with China. They look the other way until they are caught. How simple for a US
company to inspect or test their own product that is being manufactured in China.
The business model in China is one of complete disregard for the safety of their own people and the
products they export abroad. American companies know they are playing with fire when dealing
with them, but the allure of high profits is too irresistible and there are not enough government
inspectors to check everything.
even Chinese mothers won't buy their own formula because it was causing so many illnesses and even deaths.
