I've read about two options for spraying stain onto a fence:

1) Garden Sprayer

2) Airless sprayer.

I have a couple questions. First of all, why can't I use a traditional compressor with a sprayer? Why is an airless recommended over a compressor based sprayer?

Second, is there much difference between using a garden sprayer versus a airless sprayer?

For stain, you're going to want to back brush it regardless. So anything that gets the stain on the wood is going to be faster than brushing it on.

Might wanna read about the downside of staining a fence. IF you haven't installed the pickets and can seal all 6 sides, it's okay to do. IF it's already up, you can't seal the bottoms-expect issues. The species of wood doesn't matter. IF it's treated wood, best of luck.
