I keep seeing some great deals on couches on craigslist but the yuck factor is something I cannot get past. I also worry about bed bugs, roaches, things of the like. I have friends that have purchased used furniture for years and never had issues.
Is my concern about contaminants a valid worry? If so, should I stick with looking at new furniture?
If you wouldn't let used furniture deter you from buying, what things do you look for to ensure you aren't taking someone else's pest problem into your home?
Has anyone steam cleaned a couch?? Does it make a difference?
I would buy used if it looked clean and smelled okay .One time we had a new sofabed delivered and when he opened it, it had a mouse inside, he had to kill it with a broom.

Totally depends on the household you are purchasing it from. If it is from a beautifully kept, well maintained home and looks to be in near new condition, you should seriously consider buying used. But these couches are still hard to sell, so you should not need to pay more than 30% of the new price.
You can't just go by looks. You have to sit on it and see if the cushions are firm. Feel the arms. You shouldn't feel any wood or godforbid, cardboard like some sofa manufacturers use.
Yes, I'd buy a used sofa and have but it was in great shape and from a good manufacturer and came from a spotless home. The only thing wrong with it was the upholstery pattern which I had changed. That was over 10 years ago and the sofa set that I bought is still in great shape.
I bought one or two in college when I care more about spending as little as possible on furniture. Never had any issues. I can't see doing it now, although I did pick up a free ikea chair off Craigslist a few years ago that I still have (one of the types that you can throw everything in the wash). It's probably not worth the hassle unless you have a truck to pick it up and it's an extremely good deal.
Would and have. The couch I'm sitting on right now was bought used from Criagslist, um... 4 years ago. Not one. Single. issue (and it was 1/3rd the price of new for what still Looks new).
Heck, I've bought (and slept on) used beds too...
I'm not sure what the hang-up is for some people. I know my mother-in-law gets all worked up over our Craigslist shopping, but I've never understood why.
