I just noticed that Best Buy had a good selection (sort of) of scratched and dented appliances. One was a dryer that had some dings and noticeable surface marks, but it was HALF retail price! Anyone had good experience buying appliances like this from anywhere and they lasted a very long time?
I bought a new jennaire dishwasher that was scratched. Bought from Lowes. At the same time I searched for and found a little bottle of the appropriate touch up paint. But guess what, the scratch was so small that I never used it. The dishwasher worked perfectly for 12 yrs, and I only replaced it because the (expensive) racks started to rust. I'm not sure I would feel the same way about dents or dings. And yes, it was half price.
Bought a GE gas range at a discount due to a dent in the side. Didn't bother me as it would be sliding in between kitchen cabinets. Range lasted 20 years.
I've bought lots of scratch & dent appliances over the years, with or without dents, most of the current crop of appliances are junk & the factory warranties are shameful. Buy the extendo-warranty with the dented appliance & you should be fine. Fwiw, Sears has sold scratch & dents for years through their outlet centers & 50% off list is about right - 25-30% off is common on appliances in the box, on sale.
If it's cosmetic, and no vital parts are affected then it's up to a buyer to deal with the imperfections, or not. Some very minor would not bother me, if the price is right. Some could be concealed.
Make sure the factory warranty isn't voided. I don't care for extended warranty. Pay with the right credit card, and double it, free. http://www.creditcards.com/credit-ca...nties-1273.php
My fridge is a floor model I bought at Best Buy for less than half price. (it was still $1000 though) It has no visible dents or scratches or anything wrong with it. One of our friends works at Best Buy and he told us when they were marking down the floor models so they could change them out. I've used the fridge 4 years with no problems at all, so far.
I bought a fridge that was badly dented on the side. I then bought some 12"x12" cork squares and applied them to that side. Voila -- the cork squares hid the dent and also served as a memo/artwork/photo board. And the fridge worked well for many years.
We've purchased a stove and a refrigerator at a scratch and dent and had great luck with them. They've lasted for many years. In the case of the stove, there was a big scratch on the side, which didn't matter because that side would be completely hidden by the cabinet that was next to the stove anyway. The refrigerator had a scratch on the side, that was again hidden next to a wall, and the handle was slightly off-center -- it probably was bumped by something at some point. But it was barely noticeable, and most people who were in our kitchen never noticed it at all unless we pointed it out, and even then, they'd have to look very carefully. We got a fantastic deal on it.
Sometimes the 'scratch and dent' outlets carry items that weren't even scratched or dented. The item is perfectly good, but didn't fit in the original customer's kitchen. But since it was ordered and went out for delivery, the store either couldn't or wouldn't put it back in their inventory, and would send it to their outlet.
I always start in the scratch n dent room and see if they have what I want. I got an amazing fridge that had a noticeable scratch but it was on the side that went against the wall in my kitchen. I also got a washer or dryer, I can't even remember which one which supposedly had a dent but I couldn't even see where it was. They managed to find me some "damaged" laundry pedestals too, which were just dirty from being out of the packaging but had no damage that didn't wipe off.
I think all returns go into that room even when they aren't damaged. Definitely some good bargains to be had.
