It's a done deal! I've already done it. Yesterday I purchased a beige leather sofa off of Craig's list. Because the light was dim in the seller's house, I could not see that the sofa was very dirty until I got the sofa outside in the light. It was too late! I'd already paid the lady. But the price was reasonable, so that's all ok.

This morning, I sprayed on a mixture of Dawn Dish Detergent and water and wiped the sofa down - remarkably cleaning it very well.

I then conditioned the sofa with leather conditioner that my husband had for his leather seats in his truck.

I added extra foam to the seat cushions.

So far, the sofa looks great for the price and I'm happy.

Just wondering if washing down with Dawn Dish Deter Ok?

Coincidentally, the day before yesterday, I purchased a beautiful leather recliner off of Craig's list. The recliner was in almost new condition and the price was a steal. Looks great with the sofa - a match.

Yes, no problem washing off w/ mild solution of Dawn, especially since you followed that w/ leather conditioner.

The big no no on leather would be stuff like windex. You would not believe how many people do that!!! It dries out the leather. Leather needs to be "fed" - and you will be fine w/ washing it off occasionally if needed, drying well, then conditioning.

Smart shopper! So glad you found some great bargains!

ditto, just dont forget to condition it! You may need to do it more often in the winter, due to low humidity.

This is great information, I plan on outfitting my new home in leather furnishings. I use dawn for my dishes so won't have to buy special. The also use dawn for cleaning up oily birds and it's great for taking the gummy glue off of the dang stickers.

if you are going to do that, try to buy aniline dyed leather, its much better than surface dyed, which can rub off.
Aniline dyed leather is tumbled in a big drum, the dye is forced into the leather, instead of just coating the surface, its more expensive, but it lasts soooooo much longer. btw, aniline-dyed leather upholstery lasts an average of 4 times longer than fabric, thought you might wanna know.
