I currently own an older home that has traditional lath and plaster. The house is 100 years old and the walls have some cracks in places but overall they have held up quite good.

Question I have is, I plan on building a new house and would like to avoid drywalling and go with a veneer plaster 2 coat system. Based on previous experience drywall is quite good but overtime I have occasionally seen problems 10-20 years of popped nails, nicks, seams showing etc.

Would blueboard with a 2 coat plaster method solve the these issues. What is your experiences with homes with the veneer plaster? Can it last just as long as the older method.

Interesting question, will subscribe. It seems like most of the house projects on This Old House, they use blue board with a plaster veneer.

This is not a result(s) of drywall. These are the results of framing materials, framing techniques, and climate.

So, with that in mind, are the extra dollars of a blue board installation worth it? I don't think so. Besides, with the average ownership period of a home less than 10yrs- where's the ROI? There is none- walls are like tires on a car; they're expected to be there; regardless of quality.

If you want the qualities of plaster with the ease of drywall, we found that using 5/8s reinforced commercial drywall is somewhat similar to plaster in many regards. If you want the full benefit of plaster, you can skim coat it.

It is hard to find competent plasterers these days. I had to import one from Mexico (where the use of plaster is still somewhat common) to restore areas where we did not want to put in drywall.

When we did our addition and renovation, we went with skim coat plaster. It did cost more but IMHO was worth every penny. The walls are perfectly smooth and take paint better than drywall.

Here in New England there are plenty of good plasterers - usually Italian or Irish folks.
