I have a washing machine on the 2nd floor of my house located within about 6 feet from a toliet. This washing machine drain also is vented. There is a vent hole that is capped off (just realized this) we are getting a sewage odor by the washing machine and it has to do with this set up as thats where it smells. Now if i open the vent cap the smell seems to get worse. Should i leave this capped and closed (vent) or leave it open. Dont want the smell and not really sure whats going on hoping to get some advice.

Is your washer sitting on a drain pan? If so the trap under it may have dried out allowing sewer gases to enter that area. Pour a half gallon of water into the pan, and see if the smell goes away.

If so, it shouldn't be a part of the house and sewage (DWV) drain system.

Yes I did think of that, but one never knows, does one?

A lot of laundry pans just drain to exterior, and are not connected to waste pipes.

A washing machine hookup looks like this, with the venting going after the hook up.

Are you saying you have an extra pipe?

We have a drain pipe (no drain pan). The drain pipe from washer goes into drain pain. Then next to that there is a capped off pipe that says "Vent" on it.

Only thing I can think of is they did some kind of wonky vent setup. Do you have a Studor mini vent attached? They can go bad and need to be replaced.
