My cashmere sweater says hand wash only. Can I throw it in my washer under the hand wash/wool cycle?

Not sure I would take the chance if I really liked my sweater (especially considering it would only take a few minutes to wash it by hand) but DON'T put it in the dryer, no matter what else you do. Heat will probably make it shrink. When wet it can stretch. Block it flat.

Cold wash, flat dry. Haven't had one shrink yet.

Shrinking is in the drying, not the wash, unless you use really hot water. Damage and pulling can occur in the wash. Wash it alone and use that cycle and you should be fine.

Expensive fabrics I would rather wash per hand, gently twirling in lukewarm water with very mild detergent, or baby shampoo. To avoid altering the garment's shape, don't pull or stretch the fabric or rub it against itself, which can cause pilling. Rinse well. Make a ball of the fabric and gently squeeze excess water, then roll in a towel to remove more water. Unroll and repeat with new dry towel. Finally lay it on the top of a dry towel, smooth your cashmere gently back into its original shape.
Your sweater will look like new, even after many washes.
It's not that big of a chore, and really worth the effort... I would never wash wool/cashmere garments in a washer, no matter how "gentle" is the cycle.

Personally I would dry clean a cashmere sweater.
