There are several smoke detectors in my house but it's the one that Laurel & Hardy electricians installed in the loft at 23 feet above the floor that's chirping! I cannot get to it. For now I shut off the circuit breaker to the loft but what needs to be done to that wired in smoke detector assuming I can find some able person with a tall ladder to go up there?

It will stop when the battery dies.
Me electrician told me that the early life failure rate on smoke detectors is quite high. He has a box of 20 new ones in his truck.

So the detectors fail, not just the batteries? Oy. Chirping NOT allowed in this house!

It sounds as if she said it's hard-wired, not battery-operated.

My experience with hardwire smoke detector with battery backup: If there is no AC power going to it, it will chirp until the battery dies. If you are getting a chirp with AC power going to it, it's likely the battery is dead and the chirp is a warning of the battery backup.

You have a 23 ft ceiling height? This isn't making sense, when you describe it as loft space. Typically a loft is accessible. Sounds like you need to resolve this loft issue.

Logically to stop the chirping you put another battery into the alarm.

If you can't do it, hire a handy man.

You start disabling fire/life safety devices you may run into insurance issues. Besides it's a really dumb idea.
BTW
The 23 foot high ceiling install isn't a "Laurel and Hardy" electricians install. A smoke detector must be installed at the HIGHEST point of the ceiling. That's code. If it must be installed on a wall it must within a certain distance of the ceiling (4-12 inches). I install heat and smoke detectors in attics now also.
You really just need to replace the battery. And you really should turn the breaker back on. That's a bad idea too. If you have a fire you have NO WARNING. House fires start quick agent big fast. And just so you know most people die in a fire from smoke inhalllation not burning. There any many toxic things in a house fire. It can knock you out very fast.

think safety first and keep your SD operational at all times

you must be able to come up with about 18 feet of stuff (wastebaskets, coffee table, appliances, etc.)around the house that you can stack on top of each other to make a tower to reach the SD and change the battery.

I don't know if it was intentional, but this post is very funny.
