One of those things I never put into garbage disposal is expandable foods. Foods like pasta and rice expand when you add water in a pot; they do the same thing once inside your pipes or garbage disposal and are the cause of many jams and clogs.
We just abuse the snot out of ours. They cost little and take ten minutes to replace. I do not mind replacing one every eight to ten years. It beats keeping a list of rules next to the sink.
My thoughts exactly. And I hate putting food scraps, bones, etc. in my trash because it makes the trash can smell. Our garbage only gets picked up once a week and I don't want my garage to smell like food scraps.
Why even have a garbage disposal if you aren't going to make good use out of it?

We get coyotes, raccoons, foxes dogs cats even geese get into our trash if there is any food in it. Of course if we walk away and are out of sight, our dogs are apt to get into the trash before ti even makes it outside. They get scolded, we get a mess in our kitchen. The disposal solves all fo those problems and makes us have happier dogs and a cleaner kitchen.
I think replacing them is kind of fun. I have so many projects that go badly and never seem to end, this is one that always goes well and easy is quickly done and I have that great feeling of accomplishment. Plus it impresses my wife that I am able to replace it and have it working so quickly. I think next time I will buy a cheaper one so I can replace it sooner. These high end ones just seem to last forever.
I use mine, my husband doesn't. But he also insists on doing the dishes because "I don't do them right". Ooooo-K! No problem! No peels, no shells, no bones.
Love the ice idea. Never thought of that but I can see how it would work.
I pour bleach down ours if we are going to be gone for more than a couple of days. Keeps the smell down. Housesitter, but I don't think she cooks.

i hope you don't put bleach down the disposal. if you do that will ruin the seals over time!!!
We take greas or cooking oil and pour it in a empty coffee can or glass jar with a lid. Then it goes in the fridge. When it's full we throw it in the garbage bin on trash day.
Best to just not have a disposal, or at least use it very sparingly, if on a septic system, in my experience.
Yeah, keeping grease/oil out of your pipes avoids trouble too.
In general we don't try to wash away coffee grounds, vegetable peelings, bones, etc. Instead these go into the garden spot, where they enrich the soil. But there are only 2 of us in the house, and the garden is fairly large.
Owing a garbage disposal in the first place is the first mistake. Plumbers get very wealthy from garbage disposal owners. Its right up there with dumb ideas like flushing kitty litter in the toilet.

i had to laugh when i read this, it is so true for us too. i just replaced one last month that was 20 yr old, it still worked, just too noisy after 20 years of abuse. i can't hear the new one run!
