We have a 30 inch 4 burner GE propane converted cooktop that just started having a gas smell. It is 12 years old. It is apparently leaking a little. There is also another issue where sometimes a burner won't start up immediately. The numbers have also wiped off of the stainless steel base, so it's an estimate every time we turn it on.
We think we might want to replace this.

1) is going from a 4 burner 30 inch to a 5 burner 30 inch a pretty easy replacement?

2) Is an appliance store vs going to lowes a better idea?

3) I know we need a conversion kit. Any other things I might not be realizing before I go through this process?

Electrolux ICON® Designer Series 36" Slide-In Gas Cooktop and we love it going on 9 years now! Before we had free standing gas stove with four burners, we did have to replace the plug in the wall, and had the propane company come out install the rest, it required by law here, you have have a permit.

1. Typically yes. But, you need to measure! Is your current device a "cooktop" or a "rangetop"?
2. Products can be same, prices be same. Shop where you have the best overall experience.
3. Might not need conversion kit. Some companies make LP models.
4. I have been spending a lot of time recently researching gas cooktops for our planned kitchen renovation. I like this one from Bosch - http://www.bosch-home.com/us/product...NGMP055UC.html

Personally, where I bought the replacement gas cooktop would be a secondary concern (except for making sure I measured extremely carefully). My primary concern would be having a certified gas technician install it - it's never a really good idea to fool around with gas installation due to safety concerns. Just MHO.

If Lowe's installs it,wouldn't they have a certified installer to cover their rears?

Thank you guys for the responses!

It's definitely a cooktop. Sits on top of or in our counter. No oven below.

Nope. Lowes has no rear to cover, as they are not doing the installation.
They pass that off to independent contractors.

Of course, if you choose to buy from them, you can have the product installed yourself, by a person of your choosing.

When we purchased our propane stove two years ago, we shopped big box and local appliance stores. It so happened that the local store beat the Lowes/Home Depots of the world, but I'd recommend checking out both. One deciding factor was that the appliance store threw in the natural gas to propane conversion kit and installation of the kit for free.

We had a less than positive experience with the installers the company sent out. They are paid to install as quickly as possible and get out of there. When I caught them trying to physically ram the refrigerator into a too small hole (long story - measurement error on our part), I sent them on their way and did the installation of the dishwasher and refrigerator myself. I also had to have a different contractor come out to fix the hack job they did on the gas installation to the range. Long story short - if you have a contractor or company you trust, I'd get them to install it.
