New home, new kitchen. Currently have granite in our kitchen but looking at a fresh start and considering quartz. How does quartz hold up to staining, hot pot placed on it and cost?
We just bought a quartz countertop for our remodel (hasn't been installed yet). I know dozen of people who have it, and it's pretty much just as destructible as granite, it just looks better, IMO. It will also be a little more expensive, though.
I've had black Silestone quartz in my kitchen since 2008. My kids were in their late teens when the counters were installed and are now out of the house so take that into account, but I've had no issues with hot pans. Staining is probably not as much of an issue with the dark color. The cost was slightly more at the time than granite. I may be updating my kitchen shortly and will likely choose quartz again.
Quartz is a great countertop product that’s actually harder and less porous than granite but as others have stated, it’s less heat resistant if that is a concern.
A quartz countertop is about 20% to 40% more expensive than granite and since the quartz is a manufactured product, it is hard to duplicate the veining and appearance of natural granite.

Quartz will definitely not handle hot pans like granite will. And frankly, with either one you should be using trivets.
Staining is not a problem with quartz in my experience. Cost is completely dependent upon the specific brand/pattern used. There are some very fine granites that can cost more than a "plain jane" quartz.
I would never put a hot pan on granite or quartz. I have had both and prefer quartz. I have had no issues with quartz staining and currently have one that is a white base with gray and dark blue veining.
I also don't like the dated blotchiness of granite, loved marble and quartzite but not the staining and upkeep. Went with Silestone Pietra this time and love it.
