We are building a new house and my wife really wants a sliding barn door for the master bathroom. Are there any negatives or issues to be aware of, other than the higher cost?
Barn doors, in a few years it'll be the iconic design flop everyone remembers, like shag carpet, black and gold, granite Everywhere.
While you've got to make yourself happy, it's so clearly a fad that will soon be out of style and forgotten. Not exactly something I'd want in a custom built home, but then again I don't like they way they look anyway. Pocket doors? Now that's something you'll actually see in high-end older homes and will *never* go out of style.
I also wonder how noisy they are? If someone has to get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom or something, are they going to wake people up by using the door? I always wonder that when I see a design show that puts one in a bedroom.
I really do like pocket doors - and actually have one on my bathroom and for my pantry / laundry room. They're obviously great for smaller rooms because no door swing either into the room or out into a hallway. About the only negative is that of course you can't have electrical switches / outlets or pipes inside the "pocket" space.

I have several pocket doors in my house which I like and they are an efficient use of space but candidly, that barn door looks like crap.
