The day in the snow storm, I met face to face that racoon, no lights, and moving south!
the sweet Bichon snifed him out! yikes! thank god we had a barrier!
Doing a little reading, it seems they are not restricted to California, although they are partial to warmer climates.
I must say, that is the one good thing about our miserable, freezing cold, snow covered winters we have here in Chicago. At least they weed out a lot of the really creepy bugs, reptiles, and rodents!
That;'s what usually drives them in from the cold to have their young. Rodents love a dry ;warm place when it is cold. that's why they pick sewers;they are warm when its cold.
Too funny - provides a good visual. Take plaster paris, make a half and half mixture with cornmeal, put it on a couple of paper plates in your attic. There's also specific packs of rat poison that you can toss in different locations, too.

No, real rats. It seems to be something restricted to California. Friends and family there all have their stories about roof rats as well as rats hanging out in trees.
Sometimes you will see date palms in California with a metal band around the trunk. I was told this is to prevent rats from ascending up the tree.
