Hi, my 11-12 year old Whirlpool Roper dryer wouldn't turn on this past weekend after drying clothes on high heat (which I never do). I'm trying to decide if it is worth it to have it fixed, which will run anywhere between $125-$185 depending on the issue, or replace it with a new dryer. I had the heating element replaced in it a few years ago so this is the 2nd time it has had an issue. The washing machine works fine but was bought with the dryer so who knows how much longer it will last. Thanks.
If you are at all handy diagnosing and repairing a dryer yourself really isn't very hard at all. Once you open up the cabinet there really isn't much to a dryer. I've repaired our dryer a couple of times for different issues. The most expensive parts aren't going to cost much more than $100 which is a lot less than buying a new dryer or hiring someone to fix it. There are several websites out there that make it easy to diagnose your dryer problem and the parts required to fix it.
Instead of going from "it won't turn on", to "should I buy new?"- why not diagnose what the problem is first? It maybe something simple that won't cost you a dime!

I'm not handy with dryers and neither is my husband, but my father-in-law just said he will come over this Sat and take a look at it and maybe he can figure out what the issue is. Fingers crossed.
I would vote to repair rather than replace, if the washer and dryer "match", why break up the match, and secondly electric dryers have not improved in efficiency much if any.
As noted, any handyman might be able to fix it for little money. Electric dryer is a pretty simple device really.
I like to have things match if it's practical. If you don't care about the match, go ahead and buy a new one.

When I read "old" I immediately thought "FIX!!" but then I saw that your idea of old is 11-12 years old. Eh. I'd probably just replace it. IF it were really old, then it would probably be in the "they don't make them like that anymore" category and it would be worth it to fix it. Just my .02
At least open it up and and take a look inside . A bad element or a burnt connection is a quick fix and a very common issue .
