I live in a small pier and beam house (1100sq ft) with no place to put my car to protect it from the elements. I don't want to block the light on the east side of the house where the structure needs to be put. So I am thinking about a carport (overlapping the deck at the back) or a detached garage to the south of the deck.

But before I can do anything I need to remove trees - unless carport and garage companies also give advice about or can clear the land for the structure. I am at a loss about how to proceed.

I am also thinking that it might be prohibitively expensive to clear trees and build a garage, but maybe there are cheaper alternatives to what I see in my mind.

What would you do? See photo.

If you want a carport the way to go is probably a kit -- Alan's Factory Outlet - Purchase Metal Carport Kits at Great Prices

Smallest footprint is 12x21. If that will require removal of trees you don't have too many other options, maybe just plop down blocks Porous Paving: Open Cell Concrete Block : TreeHugger

Going on a budget you could probably just buy a carport and set in on the front or side of your home.
They will deliver and set up at your place.
Something like this:

They are pretty sturdy. My friends bought one like this.

Thank you Elnina. Lots of great information. I think carport makes more sense than garage. It will go on the side of the house, although I then have the choice of either partially blocking light to the back bedroom window, or taking out some trees.

Check first if those cheap "portable" carports are even allowed where you live.

They are not allowed where I live.

No problems here. No HOA. No zoning laws.
