Remove the nest if there are no eggs as birds can get quite angry when you go near the nest and over a door is impossible not to. For a quick fix, crinkle up tinfoil and place it on the area where the nest was, otherwise that nesting bird and her mate will just come back and make another one. The permanent options seem a good idea to keep birds from nesting. We had two nests on our lights at our front door and decided to leave them be. A snake decided not to and ate the eggs. The birds, fortunately, did not come back the next year. They got the message I guess.
There is no way I would let a birds nest stay above my front door. How the hell are you supposed to come and go without being attacked by birds? Who has time to be coming and going through a back door? As long as there are no birds in it, I see nothing wrong with knocking it down. That bird will live. Let her go and build her nest elsewhere.
There are several types of birds that never ever nest in trees.
Yes, I realize that. It's like saying fish belong in the ocean when we all know some fish don't survive in ocean water. Really, it's time people stop reading so much into benign comments. The point is those spikes work ... anywhere you place them.
It is illegal to remove nearly all bird nests in the US and other countries under the migratory bird act. Possessing the feathers and parts of nest is also illegal and can get you a fine from a few hundred to thousands of dollars depending on the bird and action. You can remove the nest after the birds have moved out. You may also remove the nest if it is a non native specie but you will need to positively ID the bird to do this. Migratory Bird Treaty Act
Just saying...

Ever notice there are no bird's nests on the White House?
What has the world come to that people want to sweep birds out of their nests? It's a damn gift to find that one's home has been chosen, that one can chart the progress of the hatching and development, that every day is blessed by the utter miracle of these little beings.

I didn't consider it benign if you really believed that all birds need to build their nests in trees. People aren't mind readers.
