I need to buy a new refrigerator for a rent house I own. I travel alot and so manage properties virtually at times. So I don't want any appliance breakdowns. I found a screaming deal on a refurbished fridge at the Sears outlet store. But I am hesitant. Is this a good or bad idea?
The fridge I am looking at at the Sears outlet store is "factory refurbished" and I think that means a customer returned it and it went back to the factory and was repaired. Its for a premium rental property with a high rent and has an upscale kitchen. New for this model at retail is about $2500; on sale I can get it for $1800; refurbished its $850 and looks flawless.
I've never bought a refurbished frig but I do buy some things refurbished. Most often the appliances are assembled, boxed, and you are the quality control. If it works- great. If not, they replace it and it is refurbished. At least a refurbished unit has had someone look it over and make sure everything works. That's a plus to me. I'd be buying the refurbished unit as long as it comes with some kind of warranty.
Many times refurbs are sold with NO warranty at all - not even 90 days. If that is the case, pass. If you can get a 2 yr or more warranty (even if you have to pay) go for it.
1) Buy a used one... or scratch & dent.
2) Change your lease that it does NOT include appliances.
3) Never gives Sears a penny ever again.

If it's a factory refurb and it (should) has a factory backed warranty I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. The only time I buy extended warranties is for rentals. I have successfully used them to repair and replace appliances. I've bought floor models, slight dent and even refurbished at substantial savings. All worked fine and had a warranty to cover repairs.

If this is the case ...then why ask the Q you did?
At that market level the Q is about stainless vs see through doors...
not how best to cheap out on the purchase.
