I am renting a house that has a terrific deck on the side. It is 14 x 12 x 14 - great area some shade, some sun. I am looking for something that I can use to block the lower 1/2 of the deck all the way around so the dog doesn't get through and run out into the street. Currently I put him on a long wire to keep him safe when I work in the yard. It needs to be something unobtrusive and removable so my landlord is okay with it. I am drawing a blank.... The dog is a Malti-poo - he's short so something that is 18" high will work. I'm not sure LL will go for Lattice though I plan on making the "gates" out of lattice with wheels that roll so I can get out.

any suggestions?

Id think the easiest (and maybe cheapest) thing wouldbe to simply purchase something like this:

There's some black screening I have used around a garden. The squares are about a half inch. I think it is just a heavy plastic. Being black it wouldn't show much. You can just use some copper single strand wire to attach it to the posts and railings of your deck, no holes in the deck, and completely removable.

I used plastic chicken wire that I stapled around the deck. Later I removed it and added some wood 2x2's at doggie chest height (mine are small dogs) to keep them securely in. But the plastic was up for several years. They never tried to chew it. I don't know if your dog would.... Tenax 3 ft. x 25 ft. Black Poultry Hex Fence-206866 - The Home Depot

Buy a couple of exercise pens. They are 16 feet long if stretched out and come in all heights, from 1 foot tall to 5 feet tall.

The best way to buy them is to go online and order them from Pet Edge.

They come in chrome or black and the landlord can't object since you won't be fastening anything to his building and they are rather unobtrusive.

I take mine camping and set them up so the little dogs have a safe confined space and I don't have to watch them constantly.

I've seen them at feed stores, but don't think I've ever seen them at the pet supermarkets.

Definitely an exercise pen. Then you can move it as you see fit, add pieces if you want to make it bigger.

A lot of people use the plastic chicken wire for dogs (see comments on Home Depot site) and fasten them with zip ties. For a small dog, you could cut it in half to cover more area. This would be your least expensive fix.
