Having replaced all the cartridges in Moen faucets in a prior home, I would agree with you, not worth it, just replace the faucet. They are not that expensive unless you get that fancy Italian thing.
However, you can just buy the tool for Moen, and if it turns out to be wrong, just return it and get the next brand. If I rememebr right there are only three commonly used brands that have cartridges and Moen is by far the moast prevealent.
Faucet is now named "That Basterd". New faucet is on order, nameless as yet. Along with new shutoff valves, because of course they started leaking when they were actually used, and new wall flanges because the old ones look like crap and as long as I'm replacing the valves anyway...

Suggestion, get 1/4 turn shut off valves. They are about a million times better than the screw type. Especially when they get old. I think they are not much more expensive

Yep, that's what I ordered. The screw type always leak from the stem if you use them after not using them for a few years, and there's no packing nut to tighten so either the leak stops itself or you're SOL.
"That Basterd" is gone. Just about everything was corroded solid, too; I had to remove it by taking a Dremel 9901 to the lock rings, in two places each.
