I don't know man but I clicked on the link and I met a Asian woman tonight, lost 35 pounds and got to see flirty pics of buxom Asian women.
Thanks bro. My wife walked by and now thinks I'm watching Asian porn.

They aren't actually for snow, they're decorative. They are supposed to look cool and old timey. <shrugs> I don't get it, but many people seem to like them.

Am originally from Iowa. We had electrically heated wires to melt snow on the edge of our roof. if you let it go water will back up under shingles and ruin your sub roof. That fix is $$$$$$$

Considering your location.... meh.

I lived in Charlottesville for five years and we had some pretty hellacious ice storms as well as significant snowstorms. Not fun in the piedmont. When I lived in Chapel Hill in the 1980s, I had to drive north to DC in an ice storm that paralyzed DC. It was the worst drive of my life. Plus, nothing is designed for snow and cold, and they don't have the removal equipment so a minor snowstorm up north becomes a major event down there.

Tho it's hard to tell from the op's pic; my bet is that is a slate roof, which also requires them due to the smooth surface.

Yeah, they are for snow/ice. The house pictured is likely 150 years old, or older, so it's somewhat "old timey" to begin with.

Liking them has nothing to with it. I don't like gutters but I have them because they're necessary.

I'd rather have utility than looks. Sometimes it's necessary to have "ugly" things in or on your house.

I don't like the look of sump pumps or well pipes sticking out of the ground, but I would rather have them than not have them. Gutters, hoses and outdoor electrical outlets aren't exactly beautiful either, but they serve a purpose.

HUH? I live in Western NY and we don't even notice them. We're just used to them. They don't ruin anything. In fact, they save your roof and inside your home! If you've ever lived through ice dam damage, you'll think these things look like diamonds! Ice causes a TON of damage in many areas. A few years ago, had an ice cam and it destroyed the ceiling in our library. It caused a ton of mold in our attic insulation as well. A VERY expensive problem!

I'm in Michigan and we have them on the building I work in. And yes, they are pretty unsightly.
