We are totally in agreement with the no-shoes policy. My mom hates it so maybe that's a good thing to have in effect! Seriously though, we do it for the same reasons as snow/slush/salt etc. Plus with having young kids it does cut down on the dirt and germs tracked into the house. I always feel weird now if I walk into someone's house and don't take my shoes off.

I clean because I wasn't raised in a barn nor do I want to live in one. If I don't do it - it won't get done, and I fluctuate between being absolutely fixated on clean, or being casually tolerant of clean - can't explain why. If I knew - I could control it.....we have 23 (RIP Callie who made 24) cats in house and I clean SOMETHING every day of my life. I scoop, vacuum, wipe up, and scrub every single day because I want a clean house, and they and my husband deserve one. I am a stay at home housewife at this time, and I am as serious about my "job" as I was when I had a real one with a paycheck. In the big scheme of life it may not be important to some, but for me and my time here - I do not want to live in filth or look like a homeless person when I go somewhere (thus doing laundry and showering every single day are important too!!!)

What motivates you? When do you do it? Do you have special "cleaning" clothes? What else are you doing when you are cleaning? Anything else relevant?
Martha Stewart motivates me... watching shows about "hoarders" motivate me... living in a staged to live lifestyle motivates me.

While I don't have special cleaning clothes... my mom taught me to clean up as soon as something is messed up. And as a child, I taught DD to not mess things up so she does not have to put them away or clean up (say don't misplace her toys in the first place & after playing with them, put them back in its designated spot). So clean as you go... is my best method.. use a pan, clean the pan right after.

I could be cooking & cleaning along at the same time...
Setting the table as food is being finished to serve...
While everyone is finished & still hanging out talking, I'll be clearing the dishes while still chatting, putting away stuffs... etc.

My motto, always make time to clean so you in turn you have time to actually enjoy the home after.

I don't love cleaning, but I love (and have) a clean house. Homes have a feel about them, a personality almost - clean, clutter-free, nicely decorated, functional and comfortable homes are where most people want to be....where friends and family gather because there is just something soothing and inviting about a home with such an environment. Without exception the people I have known over the years who have overly messy, clutteed homes also have screwed up lives and screwed up children. A little dust and clutter is one thing - filth is quite another. If you don't clean and declutter, your house will eventually be filthy.

I find it very difficult to concentrate, relax or be at ease in a filthy home....in fact I'm a much nicer person when my house is clean and organized.
