Both clean pretty easily and are extremely durable. Some granites will stain if you don't keep them sealed (a very minor maintenance item), whereas quartz isn't supposed to stain. I think it really comes down to the look you want- quartz is very consistent, as are some granites, while other granites have very varied shading and patterns that a man-made product will never replicate.
i personally prefer granite. it has a nicer shine after polished or cleaned. be careful though about quartz, if you put a really hot pot on it right after it was on the stove, it could crack. quartz has very tiny air bubbles in it. they could explode and crack it!!!! but it looks really nice too!!
we recently re-did our kitchen and have quartz. I love the look. we had our done with the sink fabricated into it, so there is no separate sink. we are very happy with our choice.
Here is a good article about quartz or granite countertops. Quartz Or Granite Countertops (http://ezinearticles.com/?Quartz-Or-Granite-Countertops&id=2174544 - broken link)
If you are talking about Silestone or Caeserstone, etc....that is quartz composite- uniform in appearance, it does not require sealing but can melt under the right conditions. Granite (except of a few like Absolutely Black) needs to be sealed once a year (very easy and quick to do). Granite slabs have variations found only in nature. Go look at slabs at a stone fabricator's warehouse and you will see the beauty and variety of real stone versus composit.
Consumer report rated Qartz higher than granite i their use test for what its worht. get what you like.It is cheaper to get a more fancy edged quartz instead of the IMO; boring round edged granite you see so often. Not all granite si the same as is the case with a natural stone.
An enthusiastic vote for quartz here. It's as close to no-maintenance as you can possibly get. I've had every type of countertop: laminate, solid surface (Corian), granite, and quartz (Silestone) and IMHO the quartz wins hands down.
We just went with DuPont Zodiac Quartz got a great deal at a remnant sale.
