Said it before on other threads, but worth mentioning here: Solatubes.
I've had three installed in each of my past two houses, and in each case would have liked to do more. They have turned cave-like hallways and bathrooms into bright, cheerful spaces. AND they were quick and inexpensive to install, never leaked, and required no maintenance.
I have had 3 of them installed in my current house and I love them. You are so right about how they add so much brightness to otherwise dark rooms. I've had mine for about 8 years and never a leak or a problem with them at all.
I bought two rugs from Goodwill. Both are octgons, not my favorite since they are both not large enough to cover my Living room. And they aren't matching but mostly complentary.
I wanted rugs to cover the hardwood floor and at $37.99 for both I can live with their inperfections.
If any of you have the 911 switches for the front light I found them for $10 shipping included on Amazon. These are becoming hard to find and when you do they range from $25 to over $50 shipping not included. Depending on your age and the age of your house it might be a good $10 investment to get one and store it in case they become completely unavailable. Searching on Amazon was a bust for me. That might be because I used the wrong terms, but I tried a bunch, including the model number. Finally found it in a Google search - on Amazon!.
For those who wonder what I'm talking about the switch will turn the outside light on and off, but it also has a button to push that makes the outside light flash. This is a signal that assistance is required. All the houses in our community have them. Sun City Summerlin in Las Vegas.
The top button is on/off. The bottom button is flash. If I understand it correctly the center bar lights up red when the flashing is turned on. Let's you know if the bottom button was accidentally pressed. That is a good thing as the crew remodeling our house had our old one turned on and it was driving the neighbors (and the security patrol) nuts. They finally called us (1400 miles away at the time) and we called the remodeling company. Red light = good idea. Our old/current one is circa 1995 and is a three position toggle. And finicky. Time to replace.

As an alternative you can hang those strips on the back of things. Use a couple of those Commander removable hooks.
I bought one of these and should get it today. I hate visible cords, so I really like the cords going off to the side instead of the front, which should make them a little less visible. Surge protector is nice too since I'm going to use it for computer stuff.
I took a look at my living room - and all of the outlets are in the baseboard! Too low for these great-looking plug things. Any of you techies out there seen something that will plug in sideways low down and do the same thing?
