I have an apt which has a back-to-back bathroom with my neighbor. Every night, my bathroom starts to smell like salty water or urine. I can't pinpoint exactly where the smell is coming from. The smell almost seems like it's coming through the wall.

Why would my bathroom smell like that only during the evenings?? It's perfectly clean. Hence it's not because my walls or floors are dirty.

Maybe because more windows are closed at night? Fans or other things that tend to circulate air are not running at night? Is there a water softener in that wall or in the other apartment cycling? They use salt to soften water, and are often set to recharge and flush at night when plumbing isn't being used.

Maybe a pet (cat) in that neighboring bathroom has pee'd, and if taking a shower raises the humidity, the smell is being drawn out? I know I've had to pull a few carpets in my time (still hate that cat) due to my wife's former cat not liking me, and peeing in the corner of a living room, my home office, the bathroom, etc. Thought I got it taken care of, until humidity (or June-August for that matter) arrived, then the smell would return. Only way to fix it was to seal it into the wood itself via a lot of Killz paint onto the impacted surface (subfloor).

Reading these posts reminded me of something. When we moved my mom out of her condo, we had the rugs shampooed. Afterwards, I could smell cat urine in one corner of a hallway. I had never smelled that before, but it was a distinctly cat smell. Later I could not smell it.

My mom never kept a cat, or any other animal. But she had bought the condo from another family, or couple, who had previously owned and redecorated the place. I wonder if that isn't what you are smelling? Does something happen at night that would increase humidity in the bath? Or, does your neighbor have a misbehaving cat who pollutes the bathroom?

Yep- urine "deposits" can certainly be "reactivated" when humidity increases. Been there; done that!

Is this only in certain weather? Like when there's more heat on a certain area of the bathroom. Or even when a/c is particularly blowing on that area?

What's under or above that area?
