Something I always notice in movies and TV shows, when someone opens a window, there is no screen - they can jump right out, throw something, lean out, whatever.
Where I grew up (northeast US) we always had screens. But I asked about this on another forum a while ago and apparently not everyone has them.
So, do you have them, and what area are you in? Are there places where it is normal NOT to have them?
Defintely have screens. Too many damn bugs to not have them.
Lower level has screens, upper level does not - we took them out.
The reason being if we needed to escape the house due to fire or intruder, we did not have to waste time cutting or pushing out a screen to get out. We could just open the window and go.
Our prior house had built in screens that rolled up inside the top casing. They slid down on a track. It was a neat set up, but it was a mess to replace them when they broke.
brooklyn ny, we have screens, like others stated, mosquitoses, flies, bumble bees, and im on the 4th floor, they do come up here.
in the fall i take them out till the spring. I too like the clean look of the windows, it also keeps the screens in better condition if they dont endure the winter months.
If in the event i do open the window in the cold, there arent mosquitos.
