So I bought a 400 dollar washer 5 or 6 years ago, lately the spin cycle has been vibrating out of control, sounds like a train is passing by. I had sears appliance repair come today, $99 just to show up, they wanted $768 to repair the 400 dollar washer.
I'm good with basic home repair but have definitely never done this, should I open the thing up and have a go at repair, or just pony up 400 bucks for a new washer? Or... let it run till it breaks?
Stupid question I know, but I'd rather ask a stupid question for any last minute weird advice that may work rather than spend 400 dollars.
I was in a similar dilemma, I bought a whirlpool Cabrini on sale, the best model for like 500. My energy bill dropped, water bill dropped, clothes come out cleaner and I can do like 5x more at once with no agitator. It’s a top load, I don’t do the whole front vs top debate. I do know I have had it for 2 years with no issue and seems pretty stout, just use those afresh tablets once or twice a year $5 worth to keep clean.
My dryer of 8 years started acting up and why repair,an excellent machine,we bought a 7.2 cu GE dryer for $399,wife says dries very fast, minimal money against repair cost and why waste money on repairs,I checked about parts and was told master circuit board cost was several hundred dollars.
There are springs that hold the tub in place. Hunt around on the web for appliance repair parts. It will probably be tough to get to them with a top loader. The springs allow for some self balancing but there should be a shutoff switch, too.
My sister in law every 4 to 5 years would get the "appliance itch". Always wanting the greatest or trendiest appliance....One year it was a New washer and Dryer. Naturally my brother (being wit-filled) decided to surprise her for her Birthday! He assured her she was going to get her wish full filled. Come the day of her birthday, My Brother went to Sears and asked for THE BOXES that washers and dryers come in. They obilged . He wrapped up the boxes with a big Ribbon and Bow. My Sister in law was Gloating all the while thinking, she got her wish. Inside each box: A sponge to wash with and a dish towel to dry with!
OUr family howled at his clever humor. Ohh he knew that those boxes were going to be his New doghouse ...because she was that type to put him there. Yes a few years later they did invest in the items but like my bro lives, Things don't get replaced for trend reasons. Otherwise he would have traded her in...They've been married for 39 years....Some happier years then others.
OP: Im sure you'll make the wise decision to invest if the machine is to cost burden to repair.
or do what I do..I view washers and dryers as disposable items..go to any big box store and get the cheapest one you can find..if it lasts for a few years, good..I paid 300 for our dryer last year..so far so good..when it goes up, I'll do the same again..
