I have to replace the seized inside water shutoff valve in our 2004 doublewide. Is there a specific term for the elbow in the pic? Notice it's shorter on one side.

I can't swear to it but that looks like two street ells to me. A street ell has one end male and one end female. I think your valve is female on both ends and the male end of each ell is mating with that.

Is there any way to enlarge that recess and give yourself some more room to work? No matter what you do it's going to be a bear to replace that; if it were mine I would put a nice big hole, use some threaded fittings/unions so the next time you can just unscrew things, and then cover the hole with plywood secured with screws and painted. But I don't know anything about this kind of valve on a mobile home.

I think you've hit the nail on the head turf! Makes perfect sense now that I look at the pic and know the street ell exists.

I don't think it'll be too much of an issue just cutting it off below the elbow, assembling a new setup, and gluing it back in place, I'd rather not cut the hole larger and then have to figure out how to make that look presentable. Not to mention if I have to get the water shut off quick it takes a second to remove the current cover, having to remove a bunch of screws to get to the valve would take quite a bit longer.

Much appreciated!
