Yes. Think deeper kitchen cabinets.

Our original kitchen had 4 cabinets on either side of the microwave about the cooktop.
Each was 39 inches wide and 14.7 inches high.

The new design had a 36-inch vent hood replacing the microwave so the 39 inches shrank to 34.
But, we changed the depth from a nominal 12 inches to 14 inches and actually increased the storage space by 100 cubic inches.

THANK YOU! I loved the kitchen lighting at my last house (and yes, I chose it all ) but I have to admit, I often get so excited thinking about cabinets & appliances that I forget about the other details. Lighting is SO important but it's so often an afterthought. So thanks again for the links!

Oh, you mean deeper cabinets above the counter. I had those in my previous kitchen although mine were corner tambours. I will look into this -- thanks!
