Our toilet is making the bathroom reak. It was just cleaned yesterday but the room smells like bad sewage water or something. There is no leak coming from the toilet and it flushes fine. The water in the tank looks OK so I'm not sure what it could be. The only thing I can think of is the wax seal is on it's way out and letting gases pass through. Anyone else have any thoughts as to how to diagnose or should I just pull it off and start with the ring?

Are you sure it's coming from the toilet? It seems like if the wax ring was bad enough to let a significant amount of sewer gas escape it would be leaking water as well. Is there a seldom-used fixture in the bathroom that may have a trap that's gone dry? Or possibly one that doesn't have a trap at all?

That's what I was wondering.

It's the downstairs bathroom, toilet is used daily, no shower. The upstairs has two full baths that are both used daily as well (2 little ones). I noticed it two weeks ago and it went away after a good bowl cleaning. Bowls were cleaned yesterday and the smell is back again but almost worse and a re-cleaning did not help. No noticeable leaks.

I have had to replace a wax ring for same problem. Bad smell but no water leakage.

Upon further inspection it looks like there was a repaired crack on the back that may have been repaired sometime ago. There is a yellowish hard residue and a hairline crack right along the back that I noticed after scraping. So looks like I'll grab a new toilet and ring this weekend.

Two things, broken seals or a clogged vent pipe. Have someone go up on the roof and check out all the vent pipes and make sure nothing got stuck down there. Also check the toilet for cracks, especially near the bolts on the floor.

Is the toilet caulked to the floor?

This is a good idea with birds nesting and all.
