Hello, my wife and I are considering buying a manufactured home. It's 2001 double wide (sorry we have yet to be told the make). We hired a home inspector who used a thermal imaging camera. He aimed it at various places on the walls and ceiling. One place he aimed was a wall near or at the ridge of the roof, the image showed two good sized purple streaks coming down inside the wall, (purple meaning cool or maybe damp?) He probed the area with a moisture meter, I didn't get a chance to see what the reading was but he said it was good. I don't know how deep the probes went into the drywall to get an accurate reading. My question is: He said the moisture reading was "good", then how does this explain the cool streaks it showed inside the wall? Thanks in advance and Thanks again.

If there is a vent stack in that area, what the thermal image was picking up was the cooling effects of the vent stack.

Think of it this way-

FLIR imagining is related to temperature differentials. The moisture meter eliminated the presents of moisture (or the evaporation of such), which would lead one to believe its air leakage; or some other form of air admittance (as Trapper suggested).

Thanks, There are no plumbing stack outs on the roof in the aforementioned area per inspection report.

I’m assuming this is the ‘marriage wall’ where the two halves come together?

Right, It's a wall that comes transversely across, only it stops under the ridge of the roof, where the two came together.

I would call your inspector and ask this question. No one better than the person who was actually there!

But it sounds like it's a insulation issue... not a moisture issue.

I forgot to mention, this is a interior wall, why would there be insulation?

Call your inspector for best answer on why you saw what you did
