My bedroom has a switched outlet by the entrance door which is plugged to my bedside lamp. It's very convenient to turn the wall switch on when I enter, then the lamp's switch off once in bed. Problem is... the lamp is off from last night. The wall switch and lamp are just 4 feet apart, but it's just this little annoying thing.
The internet is full of diagrams for 3-way switching with a traveler wire between two wall switches. But I'm not going to punch a new hole in the wall, drill through studs etc. just for that.
1. Is there a way to set up 3-way switching between the wall switch and the lamp's (in-line) switch, without creating something very non-code-compliant?
2. Lutron sells a Caseta+Pico kit for $50 that includes a smart switch and a dedicated little remote (which I'd put next to the lamp). I don't want Smartphone control, Alexa or anything like that... just to solve the above situation. Do you think this is a good scenario for it, or overkill?
3. Any other better/cheaper/obvious solution I'm not considering?
There are lots of inexpensive lamp control systems out there. Look at X-10, which is a little dated but available very cheaply.
I don't know of any way to combine wall control with standalone lamp control. What you want is a controlled wall receptacle, or a remote 'lamp converter' and whatever remote switches serve your needs.
I sympathize, though, as I have had many such irritating little situations that needed ingenuity to eliminate the annoyance.
Have the bedside lamp on. Turn on at wall switch Go to bed, turn lamp off bedside.
Get up, immediately turn lamp on at bedside. Even though daylight. Turn off at wall switch when you leave the room.
Rinse and repeat daily.
Simple solution.
Get in that habit. They say it takes 28 days or 28 times to develop new habit.
We have a wall switch that has an LED night light in half of it, the switch in the other half.
Always lights the way to the other lamp in the room. Another solution. Simple. Does require 3 wire wiring.
Love these forums - responsive, and you guys pretty much covered all the range of solutions.
I'll just add that X10 would've been perfect, but apparently no one has ever developed an X10 inline switch. Too bad.
The Skylink unit is very similar to the Lutron Caseta+Pico kit, a bit cheaper.
Will post if I've implemented a solution.
You can pair up additional remotes with this outlet. There are probably some out there that come with 2 switches initially, but I thought this might get you started on your search.
But then you can't turn it on when you enter the room
I think t3 was having a little tongue-n-cheek. Just leave it on all the time! Then again...
