There is a sale going on now, in which the Reem furnace is “free”, a savings of about $3000. This would not be available after the end of Feb. we would definitely lose $ in an emergency situation in mid summer, but I presume a similar deal comes around every spring.
Today, I’m leaning towards waiting.
These deals come and go all the time, and oftentimes you can get them to honor past deals or offer you an upcoming deal before it officially starts.
But quite frankly, $11,000 doesn't really sound like any kind of a deal to me.
Jokes on us! Today, we have no heat. It’s 2 days before the sale is over, so I guess the fates have decided for us. We aren’t getting the $11,000 one, but the cheaper option.

If it was two days AFTER the sale was over, then it'd be the real joke!
Sometimes life step up and forces a decision - glad this one worked out for the free furnace.
The furnace wasn't the weak link in the system (the aged AC components were).
A few repairs over the next ten years or so until the new AC equipment should be expected.
So... what did the guy say is wrong with the furnace?
And is this the same guy selling the new system?

Bring in some other contractors to quote you 1) on just that work 2) NOT using 'state of the art' anything.
The furnace portion is probably worth a few repairs to make it last another 14 years.
We didn’t even ask what was wrong with the furnace, because we just took it as a sign that it was time. We were very close to doing it before the furnace broke, so we didn’t think very long about pulling the trigger. We are going with the first company. We got a second estimate which was a bit higher than these people. We are impressed with their professionalism.
It’s one less thing to worry about, and one more selling point if we move. Maybe we will even lower our energy costs.

I agree. We replaced a geo-thermal system with two units last year for $12,000. They tend to be pricier than gas or electric units so that price seems high to me.

The plot thickens. We found out the furnace is original, which means 30 years old. I feel great about getting the new system now.

I mentioned earlier that we went with the $7200. system. I’m comfortable with that.
