We generally see two types of siding here, not the same siding with varying colors..
Two is fine, maybe three on the right house but your picture shows four kinds of siding, all in different colors on the same house. Clapboard, (faux) split cedar shakes, board and batten and stacked stone and to add a bit of insult to the injury that red stacked wallstone out front ices the cake.
Any of these things could be fine by themselves (except that fake split cedar) but people need to remember that they're trying to develop a cohesive look, not showcase a variety of products, even those that can be attractive standing alone.
People do this with fencing too, enclosing a yard with three or four different styles and colors. I once saw a two million dollar house that had four different profiles of crown molding used and from a certain point in the living room you could see all four styles in the kitchen, dining room, entryway and the living room. Who knows? There may have been more styles in the rest of the house.
First link reminds me of what I call a fruit stripe gum house. Most commonly it's stone/brick, siding, stone/brick and more siding lined up like a stripes. Not a fan of the look.
Second link--no thank you.
Third link--seems appropriate: as it the roof was raised and dormer added after the original house was built so a different material was used.

"That" is quite common! Different styles of cladding with different- but coordinating- colors. Nothing wrong with that.
But using different colors on the same type of siding to create "accents" is just that- trying to "create" accents. Major failure to the eye, major win for the wallet!
