Have friends who do run a shoes off household. I respect their wishes. I carry my washable slippers with me as I have foot pain unless I wear Haflingers. And a lot of friends have through the toe type slippers for guests and I can’t bear toe posts.

But we don’t run a shoes off household. Although I do wear my house Haflingers at home. They are not washable, and I can run outside in them if need be.

The way I do it in my home is: I have a boot tray beside my door, where I will have a couple of pairs of shoes that I wear for general errands, dog walking etc. I will change my slippers to the shoes I am going to wear there by the door. For work, if I am planning to wear a different pair of shoes, I will stage them out by the door the night before -- I lay out the clothes I am going to wear the next day too, so it's part of my bedtime process. I will then either put them on, on my way out of the door then, or I may carry them in a bag with me to work and change them at my desk. Depends on the shoes and the weather and whatever.

Again, I am not a fanatic about having shoes off in the house, but from a comfort and organization perspective, this is what I do. I don't want a pile of shoes at my door, but I do want a pair or two available there for convenience. Everything else is put away.

My thoughts exactly. Shoes on, shoes off, I don't care in my own house.

I have a massive pile. Why? Because I am lazy. I have my winter & summer shoes all piled up there. I really should at least put the shoes away that are out of season.

Good to know a lot of people don't wear shoes in the house. Had a friend with me who went to the McDonald's bathroom right after we were done, we get in my car, and then walk right into my house and the bottom of his shoes are still wet. What was that? Urine all over the McDonald's bathroom floor? That's right, leave your shoes at the door.

After one of my daughters lived in Guam for awhile, her household, with four kids, began removing their shoes when they come inside. No matter if there is a basket, a tray, whatever, there is always a pile of shoes by the door and frankly, I can't stand that.

When they come visit me, I don't say anything, but as soon as I see a pair of shoes inside by the front door, I just take them and put them neatly outside the door, under the porch. They don't ever say anything either but they do start putting their shoes out there instead of piled by the door, which I just absolutely cannot stand.

Walking through McDonalds and the parking lot, sitting in your car (with his feet on the mat, I assume), then walking through your garage or driveway and there is still urine on the soles of his shoes? My guess is that he walked through wet grass or some dampness in your garage, not that somehow urine clung to his shoes without drying despite walking and resting on several different surfaces.

When the kids were little and when we had carpet, we did remove our shoes to keep things cleaner, but now we live in a home with wood and tile in the main living areas. We also have a dog who tracks in dirt several times per day. Now that we have the dog, it's not wise to leave shoes by the door, as he will hide them in various places (he doesn't chew them or damage them, but he will hide them behind couch cushions, under the couch, in his toy basket, etc). When I get dressed in the morning, I wear shoes now. If I go in the backyard when the dew is wet, I'll usually put on flip-flops and will leave them on the porch when I come in, then I'll go put on my regular shoes. Sometimes I wear slippers, but I will wear them to take the dog out (once the grass dries), to get the mail, to take out the garbage, etc., so I don't think they keep the floors any cleaner.

Common sense to take off shoes when entering somebody's house over here.

Even plumber and cable guy and furniture delivery guy will take off their shoes before entering one's house. There is no need to ask because it is a norm.

No need to put shoes outside your front door. Just buy a shoe rack and put it in the doorway.

P.S. When guests come by, provide them with disposable slippers if they don't want to walk barefoot or with socks in my house. There are many disposable slippers available in upscale hotels and international flights. Save them.

They are by the door. Well, not all of them, my wife has a collection in the bedroom closet also.

cut

McDonald's parking lot is small, my car was dry, it was a sunny day, we parked in our garage which was dry. No water anywhere. Therefore, he was smearing urine all over my floors.

For the sake of argument, let's say he did step in some water in my garage or my grass. I don't want pesticides from the lawn or concrete dust coming onto my floors where my toddlers roll around.
