We just had some exterior doors installed. We stayed home. Good thing as we had to run back to the store for some missing door sets...but we didn't hover...were on hand to answer questions and to sign off on the job...

To those of you who watch, do the contractors ever ask you why you're not at work?

YEs I know that, but my friend had that sign because he thought it was funny. His actual rate was $70 an hour, but he did not work on book time because he worked on rare exotic and British cars for which there is no book time.

I worked in his shop for two months when I was between jobs. It was fun. I learned a lot. He did not work very hard.

I like to engage them as human beings, it’s just how I am, I don’t know why but it feels awkward to me to be too impersonal, like “do my crap and don’t talk to me” kinda thing. I just don’t like that. So I always make conversation, talk to them a few minutes, ask if they need anything, then I let them get on with it. I’ll check in here and there but not to be a pest, just to say hi and see how things are going, then get out of their way. I don’t want to hover unless it’s a rare case like they’re fixing some problem I don’t even know what it is, and I’m curious. Sometimes they’re curious too, they’re not sure what’s going on, and it’s like we both are interested in discovering what’s up lol.

I depends but, generally meet the crew, shake hands, BS a bit, point out the things I'd like a specific way regarding the job and then try to check in at various critical times when certain things might be more difficult to see afterward. I usually use the "hey, hows it going? You guys need any water or anything?" when I check in.

If it's someone I know or I've used a few times before I greet them, ask how it's going (life in general) and let them work.

When the crew recently re-sided my new house, I watched them fairly frequently as I had some questions and there were some problems that emerged as the old siding came off. However, it quickly became apparent that these guys were both expert at their craft as well as really hard workers (12+ hour days), so when they came back to re-side the garage, I only looked outside when they started and when they finished the job. They really took pride in their work and appreciated my obvious delight at how good things looked.

Now, the crew that re-sided my old house I had to keep tabs on constantly. If I had not discovered it during a walk around look-see of the job's progress, I would not have found an area of the old siding that had partially collapsed inward that they were about to install new siding right over. It also turned out that there was termite damage to the sill plate and a stud. Fortunately the company advertised that they would do repairs (for an additional charge) so I bought the necessary materials and the crew did the needed work. But they would have been just as happy to cover up the bad area without my knowledge.

Did he find that he made much more working on these types of cars?

Going to be having work done for periods during next month. Will leave for work, errands and because of the noise. But will make periodic drive bys and stops, say high, offer water, go inside, just hang out even if it's noisey. Just to make an careful but unoffensive presence.
