I've experienced this twice, with two different homes.

Why does a 12 SEER 3 ton builder grade A/C seem so much weaker (takes longer to cool) than a new dealer Lennox or Carrier 12 SEER 3 ton? The SEER and BTU specs are exactly the same but that dealer A/C works so much better.

The builder doesn't care if it works long term. They just need it to work until they get the homes built and sold.

Nobody has answered the question: Why are they performing worse with the same specs?

It's a figmentation of your imagination-
It usually has more to do with installation than the brand name plastered on the product.

Well it can't be both: either it's a figment of my imagination OR when the new A/C was installed, other efficiencies (better ducting maybe?) were applied OR there's another reason.
I'm not imagining this.
I don't know for sure if the difference is installation.

My suspicion is there is another reason.

You say "Why does a 12 SEER 3 ton builder grade A/C seem so much weaker (takes longer to cool) than a new dealer Lennox or Carrier 12 SEER 3 ton? The SEER and BTU specs are exactly the same but that dealer A/C works so much better."

I say, prove it. Maybe your perception is off? Quantify the difference. Prove that two units with same "specs" perform differently.

Why don't you just air your suspicions instead of playing guessing games? He's saying the installation is as much if not more important than the product. That is not mutually exclusive of it being a figment of your imagination that two units of same specs perform differently.

We don't know for sure if there is any difference at all.

Currently in most states the minimum seer rating required is 14, why is your contractor installing outdated 12 seer units.
As soon we bought our resale house that had a 10 seer unit we contracted to have installed a Trane 19 seer replacement. Our electric utility savings have always been at least 50% less than the older unit.
