Note that most manufacturers suggest the hood be wider than the stove it will be above for optimal performance, which makes sense because vapors, smoke, fumes and heat will disperse and are more easily captured by a wider hood.

Also, larger fans can produce quite a bit of noise; you may want to consider one that mounts the fan at the outer end of the ductwork rather than in the hood itself.

I don't like the monster hoods that take over a kitchen.
I like the look of some of the range hoods... but we lived in a house for 12 years with no over range venting at all. No hood, no microwave. No problem, and no evidence of even steam damage to the underside or front of the cabinet over the range. In two houses since we've had over-the-range microwaves that are perfectly adequate unless something is on fire.

Complete kitchen remodel of retirement house we'll have another OTR microwave.

I know this has been discussed in previous threads, but thought I would ask------what if there is no vent to the outside and it will be very complicated to do that?
Will any of the options (otr microwave with fan or vent hood) work decently?
The house is 25 years old and has a 25 year old vent - original builder grade appliance-above the stove (electric stove) that minimally works. I keep thinking that anything would be an improvement but wondering if there is any guidance or recommendation one can make?

If your stove and existing hood are going to be on an outside wall, it's usually not too complicated for a competent contractor to put a hole in the wall to vent to the outside. Likewise a stove can be vented through a ceiling (more complicated) or use a downdraft vent. You can also get a hood with a filter and recirculating fan so any smoke, steam, grease are supposed to be trapped in the filter before the air is recirculated into the kitchen, but generally this is not as good an option as a vented hood. Most OTR microwave/fan combos have filters with non-vented, recirculating fans.

Thanks. The range is not along an outside wall and what makes it more complicated is that the ceiling is cathedral ceiling. I know it can be done but it will be pretty complicated I believe and costly.
Good to know that the recirculating might be ok. Like Isay it's got to be better than what we have now which is pretty much like having nothing.
