Are they different than regular ones in that they are programmed to start the low battery alert during the middle of the night?
Beep....beep....beep. Can you ignore it when that happens?
I tried but it's not just a chirp, damn thing is LOUD!
I had this issue with a cheaper smoke alarm, that had the 9 volt battery. I forgot, but I either needed a new battery or a new smoke alarm. I'd get the battery first and if that doesn't shut it up, you'll just have to get a new smoke alarm. You'll still have an extra new battery on hand.

You missed the point of my tongue-in-cheek post however, all smoke alarms signal a weak battery, not just cheap ones...it's a built in safety feature.

1. The batteries are not special.
2. You should use the required TYPE of battery. Read the label.
3. You can stop unexpected low battery alerts by...regularly replacing the batteries. Once a year will do.
You have to actually disconnect it to get to stop that chirping. That's what we did, we had another smoke alarm right outside the room so there was no need to have 2 so close to each other

Yes, they are programmed to go off in the middle of the night. Recently happened to a friend of mine. Totally annoying.
It's not the battery that does that. The smoke alarm blares the alert sound when it detects a low battery.

Disconnecting it might not stop it. I had one once that kept beeping while sitting on the dining room table (disconnected from wiring AND removed battery). It seems they can hold a charge for some period of time.

A safety feature would be having an option to suspend the low-battery chirping for 6-12 hours. Along with a "I'm cooking, dammit" 2 hour suspension. Because the real-life alternative is the battery and/or the entire smoke detector gets removed.

some have a back-up button battery.
9-Volt dies and the button beeps.
old story:
happened with my parents.
Daddy heard "crickets" chirping.
Momma could not abide with that.
fumigated the whole house.
chirping continued.
you guessed it.
