Light pollution. It is really nice to see the dark sky and the glittering stars at night.
Bugs.
Security.....people are now coming to understand that a lot of light obscures a burglar, whereas a single light from a burglar in a dark landscape sticks out like a sore thumb.
Who is coming to visit after 10 or 11 pm that needs a light? Maybe you are home late....leave them on until then.
Nice to have a light welcoming you home. Turn them off when all are in for the evening.

Despite our very low crime rate, it gives people a little additional confidence to have lights on at night. Just like the “Ring” or other doorbell cameras. We have 3 light fixtures across the front, two on opposite sides of the double front door, another at the far end of the garage, and a motion-sensing floodlight on the near side of the garage that lights up the cars and driveway. As for cost, all are LED and each uses maybe $$0.02/night in summer, $0.04 in winter at $0.10/kWh which is our rate.
There are a few thoughts about leave lights on at night.
• It could be a waste of money and energy to keep your lights on all night, but if it makes you feel safer, then it is worth it.
• Leaving your lights on can actually be a burglary deterrent. If potential burglars see that your house is well-lit, they are less likely to target your home.

Exactly. This is a no-brainer and I'm not sure why anyone would not understand that. My back yard lights up like a circus when I walk out there. I have motion detector lights everywhere and I love it.

This very, very long thread was peacefully slumbering. Why did you feel the urge to wake it up? Nothin' new here, right?
Everyone in my neighborhood shuts off all lights at night. It's the natural way....real darkness.
No crime either.
Everyone except my next door neighbor keeps their lights off at night. He has one of the old-fashioned light posts at the street, which keeps me awake on the rare occasions when I would like to sleep on my screened porch. Otherwise the neighborhood is dark so we get deer and other wildlife coming up the street, but no crime.
Our front and back lights go on as the sun starts to go down and they go off right before I go to bed. Everyone on our street does this (No, this is not coordinated). It is quite nice to drive down our street and see everyone's house lit up.
I, also, leave at least one light on in every room in the house (lamps only, not overhead lighting) from the time the sun starts to go down until I am about to go to bed. I like the way it looks from the street.
I’m not even going to read this whole thread. Instead of turning on your lights and annoying everyone else, buy some motion activated LED’s bulbs. Inexpensive and frankly better at crime deterrence because SURPRISE! is far scarier. And they work well. I have motion detector lights all around my house. In fact, most of the houses do in my neighborhood.
