Just yesterday noticed that the gas fireplace in our 16 year old house was very slow to start. Usually it comes on as soon as we hit the switch. Yesterday it was taking 1-2 minutes to start. Perhaps it needs to be serviced and/or cleaned?
Cleaning the jet outlets in the fireplace , with a wire probe, to remove the build up of carbon residue. Some old fashioned tobacco pipe cleaners might work. Second consideration would be an inspection of the ignition system and the operating gas line pressure to the fireplace . That's a job for a certified gas service technician.
An insert is self contained unit mounted into existing wood fireplace. A gas "fireplace" would not actually require chimney and typically vented on the side of the house.

There is no wood fireplace in my house. Just a gas unit.
For clarification, is your "gas fireplace" contained in a metal casing that is freestanding or inserted into a brick fireplace?
In newer homes some are built into faux fireplaces complete with fake chimney on the outside, not sure it qualifies as insert or not. The vent is on the side of the house on the fake chimney.
^^Good choice! For piece of mind I wouldn't want to mess with a gas leak and let a professional handle it
