Advice for Staining a Cedar House?

I make my own stain. The formula is from a neighbor, their house has had the same stain formula for over 100 years. The person they came up with the mixture worked for Sherwin Williams from around 1910.
1/2 gallon boiled linseed oil
1/2 gallon clear kerosene
1 gallon oil based paint(I get mine from Benjamin Moore)
I roll and brush ours on, you have to stir it every so often while applying it.

That's not too far off what my neighbor has used on his home, however his siding is rough cut doug fir. It actually applies quite nicely.

I used Redwood Sierra semi transparent from Armstrong Clark. You can order a section of samples from the company. I used the selection to stain little pieces of wood and see which one I like best. The house looks nice.
