1) speak with someone knowledgeable at your water authority. Possibly there is some change that isn’t harmful but worth knowing about.

2) consider either a point of use or whole house water filtration system.

I’ve found Florida water to often taste “funkier” than in other states, even when it’s safe. When I lived there I had a whole house system which eliminated the taste and smell problem.

Since you're waiting for your city water people to call back, if I were you, just as a gee-whiz, I'd swing by my nearest fire station - bringing food is always popular - tell them my troubles, and ask if they've been doing any hydrant flushing lately. Maybe there's been a water main break and it NEEDS to be flushed. Maybe you're at the end of a run and there's sediment built up.

Either way those guys are usually knowledgeable, helpful, bored and hungry. Never hurts to kiss up to the ones who may someday have to rescue you!

Possibly over-chlorination. It happens a lot. You can get a test kit. If it is just too much chlorine, leaving water sitting out for a day, or in sunlight for even an hour or two will remove a lot of the chlorine. Of course there are a number of other things it could be. Over-chlorination is just the most common.
