I wouldn't do it. I'd get a Sunsetter type of shade instead. Something that can fold away when not needed. I'd also think the rain issue would be horribly loud, ever go inside a HD or box store during a downpour? Next time do and walk to their partially covered garden section.
Personally I am going with a nice Aluminum framed Gazebo with the canvas top that can come off during the winter months. I wouldn't want to permanently block all of the sun on my deck all of the time.
Since the front of my house faces west, a roof on the front deck would make it much more usable. The house is an ell with the deck tucked in the northwest corner of the ell. I've thought about an aluminum patio cover for the deck but my concern is with snow load during the winter, especially since there couldn't be much slope and I live in a very snowy area. So, if I decide to cover the deck, it will be a fabric awning, possibly retractable, or just the old fashioned removable kind (I already have those, and I'm about due for new ones since these are getting pretty worn -- and they're in insipid colors anyways that just don't do much for me or my house).
The newer styles blend right in with the houses. A high percentage of homes in our area (AZ) have them. And they are not noisy from the rain. They also need no painting and are cool underneath. They won't rot either.
Our neighbor just had an aluminum patio cover installed. It looks terrible, like it belongs on a farm with a tractor parked underneath. It doesn't go with the house at all, the house being a traditional-style brick built about 1940. I expect to be able to hear the rain beating on it from inside our house.
