The water heater is the original one which comes from the builder and is 17 years old.
I have neglected flushing the heater in recent years, but 17 years is a long time, most do not last that long.
My gas company -Center PoINT Energy recommended that we signed up with Homeserve for water heater, sewage pipe, water pipe ,so I thought if you dont trust your gas company, who do you trust.
The plumbers came from a local plumber hired by Homeserve to install the new gas Water heater(Rheem),
Replacing the heater ,coverage is $1100,which is about right,if you have to remove the old one, flush the water out,and install a new one,it takes a few hours and it takes 2 of them to carry these heaters,I asked around and there is nothing cheaper,it is not just the heater ,it is labor, parts and disposing the old one.
After they left,I check the prices of these flex pipes, and the cost is around $14 each,so they are trying to scam me for $199.
But what bothers me is Homeserve, the lady is upset that I turned down the flex pipes, she was going to slap $199 to my Center Point Energy gas bill ,makes you wonder if Homeserve has teamed with local plumber to scam us?
I am thinking of reporting this incident to Center Point Energy,as HOMESERVE is not so ethical, they are probably doing this to everyone who needs a water heater, sewage pipe, water pipe repair.
Should I report Homeserve ?
First, I would drop them like a bad habit!

Extended warranties or home warranties are big money making scheme, they recommended them because they are getting a cut of the profits or were paid to do it. Some people may collect and it works out but for the vast majority of people without exaggeration you have better odds going to the casino.

I would consider that excessive especially considering there is work involved with reconnecting it no matter what they do.

He did replace the old pipes with the new pcp pipes, free !
(which contradict to what Homeserve insurance policy line 3 that pipes are outside the heater and I should pay for them)
He said they are better than the old galvanised ones as they rust.
So this flex pipe for $199 is a scam,I wil report to Center Point Energy,it should know Homeserve is doing this to all its customers

I did come out ahead on this water heater,I paid $9.99 for 22 months which come to $220 ,and the market price for getting a new heater and removing an old one cost around $1100 in our area.
But I will cancel my insurance with them now that I have a new one under warranty

Wait a month or so to make sure it’s all working properly.

My wife and I replaced our water heater a few years back.

Found out that California laws that say when you do any major water heater work, you must bring your installation up to current codes - including codes that were passed AFTER your water heater was installed previously. And of course, you get to pay for all those "improvements" yourself.

I don't know if we would have had to pay for those upgrades if we had had an insurance policy like yours. Might depend on the wording of the policy, I suppose.

I am a pilot.. I’ve not flown every kind of plane, but since I know how to fly and interpret the nomenclature. I could probably figure it out by reading the manual. just sayin

This kind of crap is why I do all my own home and auto repair. I seriously dont trust "professionals" anymore. Seems like its always a scam. You know anything but manufacturers warranty is a SCAM. Some of the manufacturers warranties are too.

I had some health problems few years back and thought I was going to have to hire auto mechanic, but I managed on my own... albeit SLOWLY.... took me days, but hey I had nothing else to do. Figure when I cant repair my stuff, probably at point I cant live on my own. Anymore the big problem is finding anything that is economically repairable to buy in first place.
