Fix or replace immediately. If there are unusual circumstances you might want to think about changing the equipment and such but mostly you fix or replace the unit..

Post Replacing an electric hot water tank is a DIY project

Depends -- if you can live without it for a few extra days, you can shop around, avoid paying a premium price for a plumber and a "rush" job.

If it's a modern resistive electric storage tank, it is DIY-able, especially if you have a friend who has done it before and has a moving dolly.

Hot water heaters only go out on holidays--when you've got company and a big pile of dishes to clean up.

Fortunately the last hot water heater that went out was dealt with by a guest who was a plumber. A quick run to Lowes and we were up in an hour--attaching the heater with Shark Bite connectors.
