I had to ask. Yesterday I was watching this on Youtube:

I had wondered if the coil could get dirty even if the filters are changed regularly. From what the guy in the vid said about changing his filters - the answer is YES. His setup is similar to mine, except I can not get to the dirty side so easily. I was only able to see a small part of my evaporator (correct spelling ) coil close to the filter. Not good at all. So I know what I will be doing the next few days...

Apparently the coil was replaced 10 years ago (and kind of kludged into the existing plenum). I saw it when it was taken out - some rust but actually pretty clean. Ducts were in great shape and really well installed initially.

The difference between the old system and new for humidity removal is amazing. On the old system near the end I needed to run a dehumidifier upstairs AND run a portable 6000 BTU to keep the temperature from climbing in the afternoon.

3 days after installation the humidity has dropped 10% or more, no more dehumidifier or portable AC running and the temperature is steady. Run time compared to before the replacement is around 7-8 HOURS less a day despite being as warm or warmer out today.

If you had restrictions in the old coil, or it was smaller in size, or refrigerant levels were low, or a couple of other possibilities, you were not getting enough temp drop across the coil to dehumidify properly. You really were at the point where replacement made sense.

It is always nice to see when it all comes together and works. Give the company you used a good review.

The simple: They give you a larger cowling to make you think the new unit is (1) bigger and better and (2) make you think you're getting your money's worth.

In reality, most compressor units could go into a smaller enclosure. Mine is half empty--and it's just a year old heat pump unit.

If you were smart, replace the other old unit also! It will literally pay for itself in the couple of years through lower electric bills.

I had a 10 year old unit that wasn't keeping up, new unit installed and my power bill dropped $200 a month. I replaced the 2nd unit that year also.

I have 2 brand new 2 and 1.5 ton 16 seer units. Both about 1/2 the size of yours. I’m amazed by new builds and spray foam. Those 2 bad boys cool down my 3200 sq ft home and cost maybe $65 a month to run in NYC suburbs.

Typically around here (SC), HVAC companies offer a system checkup/cleaning in April or May from $49 to $69. One thing they do is hose down the condenser/compressor and it coils. They also check for proper coil cooling and pressure check the system My guy spends a bit over an hour doing it all. Well worth the money once a year.

I would like to do this but, then I think they're going to tell me I need to fix this or that and charge me an arm and a leg.
Then, I'd have to come on here and ask everybody what to do...lol.

Silly huh?

Being a female, I tend to to think like this.

I will likely replace the other 2 over the next couple of years. The upstairs unit was the most pressing. My electric is around .10 a kWh so not horrible.

I have a spring service done to check everything out. I have a tank of R-22 and spare parts if needed (a lot cheaper than buying “off the truck” and my tech doesn’t mind).

I cleaned my condenser coils myself this year, but they were barely dirty.
