I wouldn't buy a 2 or 3 story home. Heck, I have a bad enough time looking for my socks as it is!
Never have, never will own a multi-story home.

My first house was a a bungalow, I liked it. My current house is a 2 story and I love it! We have been here for 19 years. It has just worked for us. I love that the bedrooms are tucked away upstairs. I loved it when we had children at home because of the separation of the living room and the bedrooms. It seemed that sounds did not carry to the bedrooms as much as they did in a one story. Especially when the children became teenagers and wold stay up later than us. Now it is just my husband and I, but I still love my 2 story. Things may change when we get really old and cannot manage stairs anymore. I hope that time is many years away.

At retirement age, a two story, is out of the question.

Much of this could be age based. At 30, I lived in a 5 story walkup (as in no elevator) in NYC. At age 60< I lived in a 3 story townhouse and I swore no more stairs. My last two new build homes have been one story with less than two steps to get into.

Now it's one story, though I spent most of my life in two story homes with unfinished basements.

Sorry I did not include unfinished basements like I recall in my childhood from neighboring homes. Now I just never see unfinished unless the basement is more of a crawl space basement (less than 7ft head clearance). I suppose most basements today are finished to achieve the ideal man cave I suppose. My husband loves his man cave. I go down there on hot humid days and it is definitely cooler down there. I also tend to fall down stairs and took a tumble down the carpeted stairs the other day. Not sure how many more stair falls I can endure. Granted I tend to always have my hands full and no hand on handrail - carrying laundry baskets, etc.

HVAC contractors I have been meeting with recently collecting bids tell me never buy a multistory home or a wide rancher that doesn't have separate thermostats set up for the various zones.

I'm glad I have a basement--it's cool and comfortable in the summer, I start seeds there in winter and spring, I store stuff there, and it's a tornado shelter to boot.

I've tripped on black hockey skates, a black cat, and a dining room chair. I don't need stairs to fall. My nose still looks OK, but my right shoulder is completely goofed up.
