Found water leaking from tank to bowl after the refill stops, and then ghost flushing because of that. Changed a new korky 2" flapper, still leaks. I tried to clean up the flush valve opening and also the bottom gasket. The gasket seems to deteriorate a bit, so one wipe will get some black stuff into the tank.

I shut down the inlet valve and after overnight the water level in tank eventually stopped somewhere between the waterline and around 4 inches above the flapper (withe the old flapper and also this new replacement). I read that if the flapper is the problem, water level would drop until right above the flapper, and if the flush valve is leaking, the entire tank of water should be gone.

No water on the floor, just leaking into the bowl. Where could be the leaking point?

Thanks a lot

Did you clean and check the surface of the flush valve, the part that the flapper rests on that makes the seal?

There could be calcium deposits on the top that would allow the flapper to leak. Check this carefully with your fingers and clean it well and then making sure the flapper is properly aligned and falling directly into position.

Interesting. This is actually my problem

Don't know who installed the thing years ago, but the fill tube was super long and tucked very deep into the overflown tube. After I cut half of that tube and fasten it around the tip of overflown tube and the leak stopped. Guess the flapper was not the real reason from the beginning.

The flapper mechanism, as a whole, is an incredibly intricate piece of engineering that can go wrong from so many subtle misadjustments.

Which doesn't keep me from believing they are all best replaced with a good dual-flush mechanism that isn't quite so... Rube da Vinci.

I had a problem with the new korky flappers no longer working. I would have to order the classic korky flapper or change the fill valve. Home Depot still lists the classic version online but you have to order it to be shipped to the store or directly to you. The plumber said that they had changed a couple of years ago. I believe there's a Fluidmaster that will also work with the old one.
